I found this season to be very interesting because it also describes the childhood of some of the characters that we have so far looked down upon. This to me is very sad because it reinforces for Pecola that even her own mother is subject to white superiority. When Pecola accidentally spills cobbler at the house of the white family her mother works for, Pecola's mother pushes her down and immediately tends to the small white girl that lives in the house. There is also evidence of the theme of white superiority that is continued in this season. The girls do not know what "ruined" means but because they see some of the prostitutes as "fat," that outward appearance must be an evil to avoid. This is when I believe the conflict between inner and outer beauty is again present. Claudia and Frieda overhear someone say that Frieda may be "ruined" like the prostitutes. During Spring, Frieda is inappropriately touched by Henry which confuses the girls even more about sexuality and beauty. ![]()
